Abstract
The prospective interventional study aimed to compare visual outcome and efficacy of retropupillary iris-claw lens (ICIOL) with sutured scleral-fixated lens (SFIOL) in aphakic eyes. Forty consenting patients were included in the study and divided into two groups of 30 each. Group 1 underwent ICIOL and group 2 had SFIOL implantation after a 23G pars plana vitrectomy. Patients with preexisting ocular pathologies were excluded. Comparative evaluation was done with respect to visual acuity, anterior segment, intraocular pressure (IOP), fundus and central macular thickness for a period of 12 months. Group 1 with ICIOL had more patients with better visual acuity (70% versus 65%) but was found to be statistically comparable to SFIOL (p=0.43), had fewer vision affecting complications (IOP spikes and cystoid macular edema). Only one patient with ICIOL developed corneal decompensation. The ICIOL is an effective alternative to SFIOL for aphakic eyes lacking posterior capsular or sulcus support.
