Abstract
Pupil cycle time (PCT) is a fast, simple & reliable clinical test of optic nerve function. It measures persistent regular oscillations of the pupil, induced by a slit lamp & is a sensitive measure of dysfunction of parasympathetic efferent limb of pupillary light reflex arc.The aim of this study is to evaluate PCT value in patients with diabetic retinopathy & its role in detecting Diabetic Autonomic neuropathy
Methodology:observational, cross sectional study.50 known Type 2 diabetic patients with different grades of retinopathy with no other significant ocular & neurological comorbidity were selected. All underwent complete ophthalmologic examination and PCT measurement
Results–mean PCT in diabetics is prolonged & is found to be increasing with increasing severity of diabetic retinopathy and duration of diabetes
Conclusion-Prolonged PCT correlates with severity of Diabetic retinopathy & is a useful tool to detect & assess amount of autonomic neuropathy affecting pupils of a diabetic patient
