Abstract
Purpose: To determine the incidence and etiologies of various acquired third nerve palsy presentations. Method: Analysis of newly diagnosed cases of acquired third cranial nerve palsy from the year 2018 to 2021 were identified retrospectively using the Electronic medical record system available in our hospital. Incidence rates were adjusted to the age and sex distribution of the Indian population. Results: Incidence rate among 140 cases reviewed, were greater in older patients above 60 years and commonly bilateral. Microvasculature(48%) cause turned out to be most common followed by trauma(14%), tumour compression(12%), post neurosurgery(10%), aneurysm(6%) and others(10%). Pupil involvement was seen in 16 patients(64%) with compressive third nerve palsies. Conclusion: This helped us to determine the relative frequency of various life threatening third nerve palsy etiologies correlating with the demographic parameters aiding the neuro-ophthalmologist for its early treatment or referral.
