Abstract
Purpose: We evaluated effects of high-dose steroids in treatment of methanol optic neuropathy.Methods: Records of 12 patients with history of sudden visual loss after intake of adulterated liquor were reviewed . The patients received 1 gram intravenous methyl prednisolone for three days and continued with oral prednisolone for 10 days. Best-corrected visual acuity , OCT, fundus photo, and ophthalmologic exam of the patients were taken before the treatment and 3 month after treatment .Results: All patients were male. Mean age was 29 ±2.7 years. Mean BCVA before the treatment was 0.88±0.02 in the worse eye in logMAR . Two patients showed nerve fiber layer edema . After treatment, mean BCVA was 1.2±0.18 in logMAR . The differences before and after treatment were significant (P<0.05) . Conclusion: Intravenous high-dose methyl prednisolone may have benefits in the treatment of methanol optic neuropathy.
