Abstract

Aim-Analyse the clinical picture and neurological association of inter-referrals between pediatric and neuro ophthalmology clinics. Methods-A retrospective analysis of 88 children examined in both the departments from Jan- Jun 2019 was analyzed. Results-Mean age was 7.32 years. 55.9% were males. Mean LogMar BCVA was 0.29. Twenty-two children had disc pallor, of which 7 had imaging abnormalities. Nine had cortical blindness. One had Leber optic neuropathy. Eighteen children had isolated nerve pathologies, all improved except 2 with traumatic optic neuropathy. Fifteen had retinal pathologies. 7 out of 9 patients with Optic neuritis resolved with treatment. One patient had recurrent optic neuritis suggestive of multiple sclerosis. Nine had papilloedema, and 2 underwent VP shunt for obstructive hydrocephalus. One had myasthenia gravis.

Conclusion: Neurological problems in pediatric age are usually under diagnosed. Prompt investigations and meticulous management can be lifesaving.
