Abstract
Aim: To document an unusual cases of retained intra-orbital foreign bodies (RIOFB).
Methods: Retrospective observational case series of 16 patients. Mode of injuries, types of foreign body, clinico-radiological presentations, management analysed.
RESULTS: Out of 16 cases 12 were male.Commonest mode of injury was RTA (43.75%),recreational activities (25.0%), fall from height (18.75%) .The predominant type of foreign body was wooden (37.50%), metallic (31.25%), plastic materials (18.75%), asbestos sheet (6.25%). The location of foreign body was extraconal in 18.75% and intraconal in12.50% eyes, cranio-orbital.31.25 % patients had IOFB associated open globe injury.Two patients had occult IOFB . All patients underwent for surgical removal of IOFB. 37.50% patients had blinding outcome.Conclusion:Retained IOFB is a common ophthalmic emergency.Cranio-orbital location is rare and can cause blindness & disfigurement. Early detection and surgical removal of vegetative IOFB is necessary.
