Abstract
Background: Cataract surgery is the most common elective surgery done worldwide and its efficacy is measured on the basis of visual outcome and complications . Methodology:1200 consecutive eyes who underwent cataract surgery in rural hospital were analyzed for visual outcome and surgical complications. Surgeons varied from junior residents to >30 years of experience. Result: Pre operatively 71% had PVA <3/60 whereas post operatively 71.67% had PVA 6/6 – 6/18.The chi square test was done to compare the change in visual status and was statistically highly significant. 84.5% underwent SICS whereas15.3% underwent Phacoemulsification. Intraoperative complications accounted in 8.4% eyes, of which damage to corneal endothelium was seen in majority and the immediate post operative complications were seen in 9.6% eyes such as SK with corneal edema in majority. Conclusion: Continuous improvement in surgical techniques and IOL implantation has improved visual outcomes of cataract surgery.
