Abstract

Aim: To study the complications of cataract surgery in eyes with co-existing ocular pathologies and their outcome

Methods: 100 eyes having ocular pathologies that may cause technically difficult cataract surgery were included. Phacoemulsification with IOL implantation was done. Patients were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively and any intraoperative complications were noted and compared with the control group.

Results: Common presenting ocular pathologies were corneal opacity (25.8%), uveitis (15.8%) etc. Common intraoperative complications encountered were conversion to SICS (21.9%), vitreous loss (18.2%) etc. Incidence of intraoperative complications was lower in the control group. Post operative visual acuity was better in the control group (>6/12 in 88% patients).

Conclusion: Detailed pre operative evaluation is crucial before cataract surgery. This could help in improving outcome by optimizing patient selection and surgical approach.
