Abstract
Aim: To study the fundus changes in pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH)
Methods: It is a hospital base prospective observational study of 100 women with diagnosed PIH.
Fundus was examined by direct and indirect ophthalmoscope at bedside.
Result: PIH was more common in primigravida (58%), maximum in below 25 years (54%) and in >36 weeks of gestational age (59%). Retinal changes were noted in 45 patient (45%) in which grade I hypertensive retinopathy was 37.7% and grade IV was 24.44%. Grade I was the most common type of change seen overall .76% Retinal changes found in severe preeclampsia and 89 % in eclampsia. Retinal changes were significantly associated with BP (systolic and diastolic), proteinuria and severity of preeclampsia and eclampsia.
Conclusion: Fundus examination is crucial for identifying and serving as an indirect marker for the severity of PIH and its prognosis.
