Abstract
Aim: To assess the visual outcomes and complications of manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) performed by final year junior residents at our Medical College.
Methods: A total of 1012 eyes with visually significant but uncomplicated cataract underwent MSICS by final year junior residents under supervision of Consultants. Postoperative Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraoperative and postoperative complications were the main outcome measures.
Results: More than 72% of patients had a preoperative BCVA of < 6/36. This improved significantly to 90% of patients having postoperative BCVA of > 6/12. Most common complications were extension of capsulorhexis in 39 (3.85%) eyes, Posterior Capsular Rent 32 (3.16%) eyes, Premature Sclero-Corneal Tunnel 25 (2.47%) eyes, iridodialysis 22 (2.17%) eyes and iris prolapse 18 (1.78%) eyes.
Conclusion: Step wise training of junior residents under supervision can lead to good visual outcome and low complication rate after MSICS.
