Abstract
Aim- To study the level of various complete blood count(CBC) parameters in patients with Pterygium. Method- 44 patients with pterygium were enrolled for the study along with another 44 patients as control group. Morphology of the pterygium was studied in details in a slit lamp for the patients of test group. A blood sample was drawn for CBC testing for all patients. Result- Red cell distribution width(RDW) values were significantly higher in the test group than control group(average=13.63±0.32%,12.37±0.47%;p<0.00001). RDW levels did not correlate with length of the pterygium(p=0.75). Other indices like Red blood cell count, White blood cell count, Platelet count, Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio, Platelet Lymphocyte Ratio, Mean Platelet Volume were comparable in both groups(p>0.05). Conclusion- Higher RDW levels in Pterygium emphasises the role of increased oxidative stress in disease pathogenesis. Further research in this area may guide us to develop newer treatment strategies in future.
