Abstract
Aim: To study indications and results of using corneal grafts for treating scleral defects.
Methods: This prospective study was conducted from August’21 to July’22. 11 patients with scleral defect were recruited. Left over partial thickness corneal tissue was used in 7 patients and full thickness corneal tissue unsuitable for keratoplasty was used in 4 patients.
Results: There were 4 females and 7 males with mean age 35.09±15.10 years. Indications were limbal dermoid excision (n=2), pterygium surgery (n=2), exposed SFIOL coverage (n=1), trauma (n=3), exposed GDD (n=1) and necrotizing scleritis (n=2). None of them had graft infection, rejection, or vision loss during follow-up (range= 2-12 months). A cosmetically good and smooth ocular surface was achieved in all eyes.
Conclusion: Donor corneas unsuitable for corneal transplant or left over can be used in patients with scleral defects due to various pathologies. It provides a good ocular surface restoration and cosmetic appearance.
