Abstract
Aim- The aim of study is to compare the application of mitomycin C and amniotic membrane in external dacryocystorhinostomy.
Patient and method-This was a prospective double -masked, randomized, trial study that included 44 patients. They were classified into two groups, first were treated using dried lyophilized amniotic membrane graft while the second group underwent intraoperative MMC (0.2mg/ml) application for 5 minutes in the standard DCR procedure. Final outcome at one year of follow-up was used to define success of the surgery.
Result-All patients in both groups showed 100% subjective and objective success rate at 3-month follow-up, but at the end of follow-up the success rate decreased to 97.92% in the first group and 91.67% in the second group.
Conclusion- The use of amniotic membrane with EX-DCR was effective in both improving the results and increasing the survival of the ostium between the sac and the nasal cavity, with no added complications.
