Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to find the co-relation of fetal hemoglobin levels on the development of Retinopathy of Prematurity in preterm babies.
Method
This study is a tertiary hospital based prospective observational study. All the preterm babies attending ROP clinic over a period of one year were taken into this study (320 babies). ROP screening, follow up visit and treatment was done as per the protocol
Results Out of 300 preterm babies, ROP was detected in 210 babies (70%). Out of 210 babies who had ROP, 140 babies (67%) showed regression and 70 babies (33%) advanced to stage requiring laser treatment. It was observed that in cases with and without ROP, there was significant difference in their HbF. The difference in the HbF level was statistically significant in the cases that did not need treatment versus that needed laser treatment.
Conclusion
A higher level of HbF could be protective against the development and progression of ROP.
