Abstract
A prospective interventional study on efficacy of prophylactic intravitreal antibiotics in reducing incidence of traumatic endophthalmitis in open globe injuries was conducted over 18 months.
Materials&methods:With informed consent,100 patients with open globe injuries were given intravitreal ceftazidime and vancomycin at the time of wound repair&followed up till 3 months
Results:100 eyes were included in the study.3 patients were lost to follow up.8 Eyes had intraocular foreign body.5 eyes have developed endophthalmitis.1 out of these 5 eyes had IOFB.It accounts for an incidence of 4.12% of traumatic endophthalmitis in open globe injuries after giving prophylactic intravitreal antibiotics&12.5% incidence in eyes with IOFB when prophylactic intravitreal antibiotics are given
Conclusion:The average incidence of endophthalmitis after open globe injuries is 7%.Our study showed that the incidence of traumatic endophthalmitis can be reduced by prophylactic intravitreal antibiotics
