Abstract

DESIGN: Retrospective study

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical profile, demographic characteristics, ocular and systemic lesions in patients with HIV/AIDS was analyzed. Systemic findings were evaluated. Complete ocular examination was done. RESULTS: Out of 92 cases of HIV positive cases, 69(75%) were male and 23(25%) were females. Most common age group affected was between 20-40 yrs. old (76.1%). 35 cases (38%) had ophthalmic manifestations, out of which 23 were male and 12 were females. Most common ocular finding was CMV retinitis seen in 13 cases (37 %). Pulmonary tuberculosis was the most common systemic disease associated with these cases [48 cases].

CONCLUSION: The study suggests that almost 40% of HIV cases had one or more ocular manifestations during the disease. A high degree of awareness regarding varied ocular manifestations of HIV among the ophthalmologists is required for the early diagnosis and treatment of the ocular disease.
