Abstract
Dry eye is one of the most common ocular complaints prevalent worldwide. Studies have shown it to be related to metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of dry eyes in patients of Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which is a multilayered disorder associated with insulin resistance. A total of 33 patients with PCOS were selected for the study along with 28 healthy age-matched controls in the reproductive age group. All patients and controls were subjected to Schirmer’s test, tear film breakup time (TBUT) and ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire. The Schirmer’s test results and TBUT were significantly lower in the PCOS group (p=0.001). The mean OSDI score was significantly higher in the PCOS group as compared to control group (p=0.001). Therefore, it was found that dry eye symptoms are more prevalent in patients with PCOS. All patients of PCOS should be evaluated for dry eye by conventional methods.
