Abstract
A 12-year-old female diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency underwent a complete eye examination along with SD-OCT at the time of presentation and 3 months after vitamin D supplementation.
On examination, BCVA was 6/6 BE. Indirect ophthalmoscopy of LE revealed a choroidal atrophic patch along the supero-temporal arcade, 3 disc diameters in area. The macula and rest of the fundus were within normal limits. The RE fundus was normal. These findings were correlated on SD-OCT; choroid thickness at the site of atrophic patch & fovea were 61μm & 177μm.
On follow-up after 3 months of vitamin D supplementation, choroidal thickness at the site of the atrophic patch and fovea improved to 91μm and 230μm, respectively.
We recommend a complete eye examination including OCT in all cases of vitamin D deficiency to rule out chorioretinal changes. Further studies are needed to elucidate the possible role of vitamin D deficiency in the pathogenesis of various retinal and choroidal diseases.
