Abstract

BACKGROUND: The study was undertaken to correlate socio-economic deprivation with clinical presentation of glaucoma.

METHODOLOGY: Detailed history of 70 consecutive glaucoma patients was taken regarding socio-economic status. Complete ocular examination including BCVA and field if possible were done. Patients were analyzed for stage of glaucoma and socio-economic profile. According to modified Kuppuswamy socio-economic status scale, patients were categorized into upper, upper middle, lower middle, upper lower and lower class.

RESULTS: Out of 70 patients, 55.7% were from lower class, 31.4% from middle and 12.8% from upper class.

CONCLUSION: The patients from lower socio-economic profile presented late with significant visual loss and advanced field defects.

DISCUSSION: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss and patients with socio-economic deprivation generally present late with advanced glaucoma.
