Abstract
Background: Triamcinolone acetonide, injected into the vitreous cavity, has been advocated as a treatment of various disorders of the posterior segment. Macular edema, a condition usually associated with an underlying disease process, is a common cause of severe visual loss. Intravitreal delivery allows the steroid to bypass the blood–retinal barrier, leading to a more concentrated dose of steroid for a prolonged period of time. Methods: 50 patients were recruited in study. Patients with macular edema, both treated and untreated, associated with diabetes mellitus (focal or diffuse),branch retinal vein occlusion, central retinal vein occlusion, vasculitis ,post surgical or any other posterior segment disorder, were taken up. Results and Conclusion: IVTA is successful in reducing macular edema and improving visual acuity significantly for short term.Intravitreal corticosteroids are not without risks. Steroid-related side effects include most importantly elevated intraocular pressure.
