Abstract

Patients presenting with the corneal foreign body (CFB) will be randomized into two groups. Detailed clinical history and foreign body sensation and pain intensity score of all the patients will be recorded at the time of presentation. In first group, CFB removal will be done under slit-lamp view under topical anesthesia. In second group, 500ml of normal saline will be used for ocular irrigation. 5 minutes after irrigation, the foreign body sensation score and pain intensity score will be re-recorded and then the patient will be taken for removal of corneal foreign body under topical anesthesia.

The standard post-procedure protocol involves use of topical antibiotic eye drop (Gatifloxacin 0.3%) – 4 times in a day for 1 week and follow-up on day 3 and day 7.

The efficacy of saline irrigation will be assessed by comparing the symptom score before and after irrigation and by evaluating the percentage of foreign body dislodged by irrigation.
