Abstract

Aim: To determine the incidence of anxiety episodes in young and middle aged females with pterygium

Methods:- A prospective study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Jharkhand among 56 and 81 males females belonging to middle aged (20-60 yrs) group presenting with pterygium .

A single page checklist for anxiety was asked to be filled up by the patients.

Results:- 29 of 56 (51.7%) females and 32 of 81 (39.5%) males had developed anxiety episodes post pterygium development .Incidence was higher in females as compared to males.

Conclusion:- The general population of our country is now becoming more conscious towards their appearance and there is an increase in cosmetic awareness .Primary indication for pterygium surgery may shift from visual impairment to comestic purposes in coming times.
