Abstract
Prevalence of DM has been increasing at high rate.India has 77 million with DM and projected to cross 100 million by 2030 .Primary objective was to assess the prevalence of DR and secondary objectives were to study the risk factors of DR ,to construct a prediction model for DR .Cross sectional,home based survey of 1250 patients was done with study questionnaire administered by face to face interview. Vision test by hand held Snellen’s chart,retinal photographs taken by Bosch portable handheld fundus camera
Results :The mean age was 62.2 years.50.2%were female.30% were from rural areas. 37.8% were from lower middle SES .52.6% were taking OHAs and 10.8% were taking insulin.8.3% had DR. prevalence of DR among males was 9.3% and females was 7.3%.DM is major NCD within Kerala with no significant rural urban differences.
Conclusion:Majority of the patients had more than one NCD risk factor.primary and secondary prevention strategies to address the future burden of NCD
