Abstract
Infective keratitis is a major cause of corneal blindness. There is a rise in antibiotic resistance of the common organisms. An evidence-based epidemiological study is thus important to know the current trend of the predominant microorganism with their sensitivity patterns
All suspected cases of severe keratitis underwent microbiological culture and identification using the VITEK 2 technique. Antibiotic susceptibility for different sensitivity and resistance patterns were analyzed
The culture was positive in 233 out of 455 patients. Bacteria were present in 35.62% of patients with fungus in 62.66%. The most common bacterial cause of infective keratitis was pseudomonas followed by staphylococcus and bacillus. Pseudomonas showed 65-75% resistance, staphylococcus 65-70%, and streptococcus 100% resistant to common antibiotics
This study highlights the current trend of microbiological profiles of infective keratitis showing an increased resistance against the commonly used antibiotics
