Abstract
Introduction: To study epidemiology,clinical profile & outcome of ocular injuries sustained by assault victims
Methods: Prospective hospital based observational study of 154 assault victims with ocular injury were evaluated. Injuries were thoroughly examined & assessment of visual acuity & OTS were recorded. USG CT & MRI findings were also noted
Result: Male predominance 61%. Commonest age group was 20-40years 55%. 30%had isolated ocular injury & rest had polytrauma.19%of victims and 34%of assailants were intoxicated at time of assault. The commonest mode of assault was physical assault 79% while 14% had assault by firearms. Blunt weapons were used in 47% cases. Majority 52% had left sided injury.Most frequently injured ocular structure was eyelid 64% followed by orbit 28% and globe injury 39%
Conclusion: Violent behavior is leading cause of vision threatening ocular injuries. Early intervention to resolve conflict, use of alcohol & illegal drugs may reduce the incidence .
