Abstract

Purpose:To assess clinico-epidemiological profile & treatment outcome of ocular injuries in pediatric age group.Methods:Hospital based observational study over 3 year.120 children were evaluated on demographics,injury profile,clinical presentation,treatment outcomes & prognostic factors.Results:63.1% were boys & 36.9% were girls.Most prevalent age group was 11-15(43.4%). Max injuries occurred at home(48.4%) f/b playground(19.7%). Most injury occurred during summer(42.6%). Most common trauma agent was wooden object(31.1%) f/b stone/brick(15.6%) & metallic object(13.1%). Commonest non-mechanical injury was cracker burn(10.7%). Left eye injured in 58% cases while B/L involvement in 7.4%.53.4% had open globe injury.Most of them had Zone-I(27.87%).54.1% required surgery & 41.8% were manage conservatively.65.6% had good visual outcome but 4.9% had blinding outcome.Conclusions:Male children from rural area are more susceptible.Parents & teachers need awareness for prevention of ocular trauma.
