Abstract

AIM: To find changes in axial length with myopia progression

MATERIAL & METHOD: Prospective observational study was done on 196 children with physiological myopia between age group of 5-18 years for duration of 1.5 years. Children with pathological myopia, amblyopia, strabismus, retinal and congenital disorders were excluded. 2 follow up at 6 months and 1 year. Cycloplegic refraction, fundoscopy and axial length measurements was done in both visits.

RESULT: 172 Children had myopic shift with mean change in spherical equivalent of -0.87 D and mean change in axial length of 0.25 mm

CONCLUSION: Changes in axial length was positively correlated with myopic progression (r=0.94, p<0.0001). Hence axial elongation is the primary determinant of myopia progression which can be used to predict the onset of myopia and evaluate the effectiveness of its management.
