Abstract
AIM:To identify the causative bacterial organisms of Chronic Dacryocystitis.
MATERIAL&METHODS:70 patients with clinically established chronic dacryocystitis who have not used or stopped using antibiotic eye drop were included in the study, done for a period of 1 year, from July ’21-June ’22.The specimens were collected by applying pressure over the lacrimal sac area and syringing,in sterile swabs and were subjected to Gram’s staining and culture for pathogens. The isolated organisms were identified and antibiotic sensitivity testing was done using standard procedures.
RESULT:Out of 70 cases,52 cases(74.28%)showed bacterial isolates, while 18 cases(25.71%) were sterile. Staphylococcus aureus was the commonest isolate followed by streptococcus pneumoniae. The most sensitive antibiotic was gatifloxacin.CONCLUSION:Gram positive organisms were the commonest isolates.Gatifloxacin can be used as empirical therapy. Results have significant bearing in the treatment of chronic dacryocystitis.
