Abstract
INTRODUCTION Christmas tree cataract also called as “Starry cataract” is a rare type of cataract characterized by polychromatic needle shaped deposits in deep cortex and nucleus.It is sometimes associated with myotonic dystrophy also called as “Steinert’s disease” which is autosomal dominant disorder. CASE A 73 yr/male came with complaints of Left Eye diminution of vision since 6 months. There was no notable ocular or systemic history. BCVA in RE- 6/6, N6 and LE -6/18, N10. On dilated evaluation RE within normal limits. LE- polychromatic needle shaped crystal-like deposits, giving appearance of coloured light decorating the branches as on Christmas tree. Both eyes fundus examination – within normal limits. Patient underwent LE cataract surgery. Post operative vision in LE – 6/6, N6. DISCUSSION The spectacular display of brilliance is very striking and evokes a “WOW” feeling in the person observing it. The color of the crystals varied according to angle of incident light.
