Abstract
AIM: To evaluate the results of treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment using a non-contact wide angle viewing system with a chandelier illuminator and to compare them with traditional scleral buckling using an indirect ophthalmoscope. STUDY SETTING AND DESIGN: Tertiary care hospital setting randomized controlled trial. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 46 subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups; one undergoing scleral buckling using WAVS with a chandelier illuminator and the other using an IDO. The primary outcome measured was the anatomical reattachment rates of the retina. Secondary outcome criteria were BCVA (logMAR) and per and post-op complications. RESULTS: The difference in post-op retinal reattachment rates and BCVA was not statistically different between the two groups at D7 and 30. CONCLUSION: Scleral buckling surgery using WAVS with chandelier illuminator had similar primary surgical success, BCVA, and complications compared with IDO for managing RRD.
