Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the accuracy of handheld autorefractor Retinomax when compared with cycloplegic retinoscopy. A total of 70 eyes were divided into phakic and pseudophakic groups according to age. The study inferred that in phakic eyes the mean difference in sphere between noncycloplegic retinomax and cycloplegic retinoscopy was statistically significant( p=0.04) however, cycloplegia minimised this difference in sphere(p=0.43). In phakic eyes, there was a good agreement between retinomax and retinoscopy in axis and cylinder irrespective of cycloplegia. In pseudophakic eyes, good agreement was found between retinomax and retinoscopy. However, a significant difference was seen in axis. Bland-Altman plots showed good agreement between the two methods for the entire cohort. Retinomax is an excellent screening tool to screen children for refractive error when used with cycloplegia. In pseudophakic eye retinomax can provide dependable results irrespective of cycloplegia.
