Abstract
AIM: To review chemical eye injuries in a tertiary care hospital.
MATERIALS & METHODS: A retrospective study of patients with ocular chemical injuries was done. Case records of patients who presented with ocular chemical injuries to the institute were reviewed over a 1 year period.
RESULTS: The study included 77 eyes of 58 patients who presented with ocular chemical injuries. Among the 58 patients, 19 patients suffered bilateral injuries. Alkalis contributed for injuries in 18 patients and acids in 40 patients. 10 patients suffered severe (grade 3/4) injuries. Visual outcome correlated with severity of injury at initial presentation.
CONCLUSION: Ocular chemical injuries vary in severity, with the more severe end of the spectrum having profound visual consequences. Poor immediate management results in more challenging treatment of acute disease. It is therefore important to consider tertiary referral for patients with severe ocular chemical injuries.
