Abstract
prospective study of 27 patients with primary exotropia was undertaken to assess for the ocular alignment, factors affecting visual & surgical outcome. Amblyopia is present in 51% patients with basic type (74%), divergence excess type (14.8%). Mean preop angle is 67.7PD. Postop orthophoric outcome is about 85%. Age at surgery(r=0.33)(p= 0.043), interval between onset & surgery of exotropia(r =0.284) (p=0.01) had positive correlation with postop outcome. Poor visual acuity & amblyopia have a better surgical outcome(p=0.083). There is a negative correlation(r=-0.354) between preop angle & postop surgical outcome. Compiling data of MR resection & LR recession with preop angle, its a positive correlation of r=0.8, hence prediction equation by regression analysis was formulated. The formula for LR recession(LRR=0.076 X PREOP ANGLE +2.37) had a better significance compared to MR(MRR=0.195 X PREOP ANGLE–9.8). MRR formula showed error of 1.8,we need more data to work on regression analysis.
