Abstract

Aim was to assess characteristics of this rare benign tumor to distinguish it from similar clinical entities with poor prognosis requiring enucleation to prevent systemic metastasis.

Melanocytoma is a rare, benign, ocular pigmented cell tumor, which commonly involves the optic disc. Commonest presentation is in fifth decade of life. These tumors are dark brown or black in color with well-defined margins. Visual impairment and visual field loss have been reported in few cases with malignant transformation (1-2%), necessitating frequent follow up.

A 44 year old female with gradual, painless diminution of vision in right eye for two years, BCVA of 20/40, no RAPD. Fundoscopy right eye- elevated,well-defined feathery margins, hyper-pigmented brownish lesion in the optic disc region. Fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence,FFA,SD OCT,B-scan and perimetry helped excluding differentials to reach final diagnosis. Follow-up for one year was uneventful.
